On the 14th February 2023, 240FLM "failed to attend" an event due to a clutch failure. The failure occured very close to the intended location in Kent and although stationary, 240FLM was able to participate as a static unit for the family who had requested our attendance and we were also able to parade a guard of honour at the roadside.
Whilst this is indeed very sad and unforseen, as a group, we are proud to have been able to provide an uniniterrupted service, on demand, for nearly 5 years without fail in all weathers and all over the UK. It has to be remembered that 240FLM is now approaching 60 years old and, as with all moving things, at that age, things unforseen can happen.
A recovery was requested via our group insurance providers at just after 13.00 hrs. However, due to the size, shape and weight of 240FLM, a specialist vehicle to undertake the recovery had to be sourced and this resulted in a 7 hour wait at the roadside for the crew. The road in which 240FLM was stricken became a veritable sight of goodwill and sympathy with offers of hot drinks, food and other facilities which were greatly appreciated by the crew. It is heartwarming to note that today, the fondness in which we are held remains and the public continue to respect and support our profession.
We are very grateful for that support.
The appliance finally returned, under tow, to home base at Romford at about 2245 hrs so a very long day for the crew who then had to find their individual ways home.
